British Columbian homeowners are often reminded that well-built wood frame houses tend to do well in earthquakes. This is no doubt reassuring, especially when major quakes are striking regularly around the Pacific coast. What may not be so well considered is that “well-built” is a relative term.

the insurance industry. Bear in mind
that all risk is relative to the size,type
and location of a quake. Moderate
risk in a M9 earthquake may look
like high risk in a M6.5 earthquake.
